Ingredients for Broccoli Onion Casserole

  • 2 lb (550 g) broccoli florets
  • 1 large (260 g) onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp. (10 g) olive oil
  • 3 tbsp. (25 g.) butter
  • 2 tbsp. (25 g.) all-purpose flour
  • 5 cup (355 ml.) milk (any kind will work)
  • 5 cup (100 g.) grated cheddar cheese, fat reduced
  • ½ tsp. garlic powder
  • ½ tsp. onion powder
  • ½ tsp. oregano
  • ¼ tsp. black pepper
  • ½ tsp salt or to taste
  • 1/4 cup (25 g.) crumbled croutons

How to Make Broccoli Onion Casserole

  1. In a large pot, bring water to boil, add the broccoli florets and boil for 2 minutes. Drain the broccoli in a colander and rinse with cold water to stop the cooking
  2. Place the broccoli in a medium casserole dish; set aside.
  3. Heat a medium saucepan on medium-high, melt the butter, then add the flour and cook, stirring, until it turns to light golden. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking.
  4. Add garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, and Continue cooking about 2 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce is thickened and bubbly.
  5. Remove from the heat and add the cheddar cheese; stir until completely melted.
